And even from the early year of their marriage Martin and Gracia believed that they were called to serve on the mission field. In response to their “call” to the mission field, they joined New Tribes Mission where Martin would work as a pilot.

The decision to go to the mission field, however, was not something that could be accomplished over night. So in January of 1983 they began NTM’s one year boot camp to prepare them for what they would face in the tropical jungles. Finally in 1986, 3 years after beginning boot camp, Martin and Gracia arrived in the Philippines (Burnham 44).

Martin and Gracia's work in the Philippines was to support the other missionaries. Martin was a pilot, and so would deliver supplies and transportation to the missionaries on the ground. All the while Gracia was working the radio, and raising their quickly growing family.

Things drastically changed when Marting and Gracia were kidnapped and held for ransom. They spent over a year of hardship, terror, and pain in captivity. Yet through it all they were faithful in prayer. Sadly, Martin died when a stray bullet struck him in the chest while he and Gracia were being rescued.

Responce
I wish that I could have nearly as faith as Martin and Gracia did. I was challenged to see the love and commitment that Martin and Gracia had for each other even in captivity. It made me reflect on my own character and wonder what I would have done in that situation. Throughout the entirty of the book I had to keep myself from crying. The facts that they were faithful in praying together made me wish that I had a wife I could encourage, cherish, and pray with.

However my desire to go to the mission field and have a family raised another question. Is international missions and serving God worth the risk to my own personal comfort, health, and family? The answer and I am sure Martin and Gracia would agree with me, is a resounding YES!

The cost of serving God is never too great! It was completely worth it! Here is why, God has called me up from death into life. Without Christ I was dead in my trespasses already. Yet God sent His Son [Jesus] down to earth offering himself as the perfect sacrifice conquer death. What more can I do but obey what Christ has given me to do?

Also, when I go to the field is there anyway to prevent me or anyone in my family from being kidnapped, tortured, or even killed? Of coarse it is possibly to be careful yet sadly, there is no way to completely prevent a situation like the Burnham’s faced from arising. As Christians we will face persecution. And no matter what form it comes in, without compromising beliefs it is impossible to rid yourself of persecution.

It is interesting to note that, Martin and Gracia were always praying, singing hymns, and meditating on the scripture the remembered. Part of the reason they were able to survive emotionally and spiritually so long was their knowledge of the bible. Wow! If everyone was as commited to the praise of God, I wonder what the world would look like.
The long and short of the matter is that I greatly enjoyed In The Presence of My Enemies and wholeheartedly believe that every Christian should be forced to read it. Through it I was convicted, encouraged, and challenged to be more like Christ and to everyday live to the fullest I can for Christ.

Who is More Important than What

I am now a Sophomore at Moody Bible Institute. Over the past year I have learned many different things about Theology, the Bible, Preaching, Sermon writing, etc. However, as I look back over everything, I think that one of the greatest things I learned was from Doctor Floyd Schneider, who said, “Who is more important, than what.” This means that my team, and how we get along with each other, is more important than agreeing on every single theological principle. Doctor Schneider said “granted there are certain theological principles you have to agree on, however, as long as you can like each other, or at least can work with each other, you can continue to be evangelizing.”

And so whether you are in “career” ministry, or are just serving God as an “average Joe,” I ask you, who are you working with, and how can you better your relationship with that person so that quarrels do not cause barriers?

Husband of One Wife

“Husband of One Wife”

1 Timothy 3:2 NASB “An overseer then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, [and] able to teach, [.]” The line “the husband of one wife” is the problematic (Fee 80) and seemingly “ambiguous” (Walvoord and Zuck 736) line of the passage. While 1 Timothy 3:2 is the verse specifically being analyzed, the line is also found in Titus 1:6 which says, “namely, if any man is above reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or rebellion.” And although, the passage has a number of interpretations which will be explored in an attempt to discover the root significance, it is certain that a moral standard is being laid down for overseers (Liefeld 129). The problem remains that how “husband of one wife,” is interpreted affects individuals, and church as they apply the verse to both pick and elect elders, because it will influence the direction of the local church.

To start, a small possibility is that that 1 Timothy 3:2 is a command that overseers, the church’s spiritual leaders, must be married (Fee 80). In opposition to this view is that simple Paul however, was both a spiritual leader and single (Fee 80), and Timothy was also single. Being married appears to not be a requirement for eldership (Liefeld 129). Yet, while marriage is not a requirement, it is beneficial for the counseling (Liefeld 129), and being a light to the community (Fee 80). Marriage is an institution ordained by God. Because of this, Paul, in chapter 4 verse 3 of 1st Timothy, warns against “men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth.”

“The husband of one wife” obviously rules out all possibility of polygamy, which should be noted was never an accepted practice of the New Testament“Christian Church” (Demarest 187). Polygamy is completely and utterly forbidden for a Christian, and specifically an overseer, to be involved in polygamy or any other promiscuous act (Walvoord and Zuck 736). The idea of a one-woman man fits by the “one wife” (Fee 80). The truth of the matter is that since God requires monogamy of all Christians (Demarest 187), then overseers would not be excluded. God exalts “monogamous fidelity” (Demarest 187). Ephesians 5:31 NASB supports this by saying “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” And so it could appear that the question “husband of one wife, refers to the question of divorce.

The bible explicitly forbids divorce by saying “But to the married I give instructions, not I, but the Lord, that the wife should not leave her husband… husband should not divorce his wife.” (1 Corinthians 7:10a and 11b NASB) Only a few particular exceptions, which are clearly defined in 1 Corinthians 7, are possibilities for divorce to take place. Another interpretation of 1st Timothy 3:2’s line, “husband of one wife,” is that under certain circumstances an overseer may be divorced. If an overseer became a Christian after he was divorced, he may be permitted to be an elder (Liefeld 128). Since God “heals and forgives” (Liefeld 128), there is a possibility that God will use the experiences brought by the divorce to allow for the overseer to counsel and minister to someone who he would have otherwise been un-able (Liefeld 128). There is also a possibility that the divorce was the former spouses fault, and the divorce was brought about for reasons of adultery, abuse, or perversion. And there are times, no matter how sad it may be, that divorce will be necessary for the safety of children and or him/herself. And so, if the individual has done everything in their power at saving the marriage and reconciliation, then he is permitted to be an overseer (Liefeld 128).

An overseer, an elder, can not be divorced is an interpretation which takes a stand that the verse literally means “one wife.” A divorced person could conceivably be married for a second time, in which case the overseer would have had more one wife. Also, a divorce indicates a failure in the relationship (Walvoord and Zuck 736). If the purpose of an overseer is to guide and lead the flock in godliness, then character flaws, which should be at a minimum to say the least, must be addressed and healed (Liefeld 129). A divorce will also be harmful to more than one family (Liefeld 129). And an overseer might have a full-time job to maintain relationships with any children that may exist.

What if the wife died of natural causes? If “husband of one wife” is interpreted literally, then an overseer would not be permitted to remarry after their former spouse died (Gaebelein 306). A problem is created by the fact that Paul urges widows to remarry by saying, “But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion” (1 Corinthians 7:9), and, based on 1 Corinthians 7:39 NASB, “A wife is bound as long as her husband lives; but if her husband is dead, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.” Thus it seems more accurate that “one living wife” at a time is permitted (Ryrie 1920). This is also supported by the Paul saying that widows should re-marry.

The phrase “husband of one wife” literally means a “one-woman man” (Ryrie1920). Look at the other qualifications of and overseer presented in 1st Timothy 3:2-9, the verses describe an overseer as being “above reproach, prudent, dignified, not conceited, and not a new convert.” All of the words and phrases listed are words of integrity and used to describe a heart condition. In other words, if married, the overseer is to be completely faithful to his wife (Gaelbelein 306). Please understand that a “one-woman man” is a man who, whether single or married, has both “character and purity” in his sexual relationship (Liefeld 130). A side note is that in a world where promiscuity and infidelity are expected and even honored, it is extremely important that a Christian’s marriage models Christ (Fee 80).

My personal belief on the subject is that if a man who desires to be an overseer was divorced before he became a believer, or did everything in his power to save the marriage, but for some reason or another the spouse would not continue in the marriage, the overseer may be permitted to be an elder. Yet with that, I believe that the one desiring to be an elder must be tested. If his life does not bear the fruits of a life disciplined in serving Christ, and striving to bring God glory, then they are unfit to serve in a position as a spiritual leader. There should be no doubt as to what the qualifications of an elder are, because 1 Timothy chapter 3 explicitly lists their qualifications.

As stated at the beginning of the paper, the views and reasons that the how and why of the phrase “husband of one wife” is “applied to all of the churches, [in short] we simply do not know. And each church will have to decide whether or not to take this [being married once] as a universal rule” (Demarest 187).

Works Cited

Demarest, Gary W. These men were chosen by the congregation and appointed by the apostles. These men although under the apostles an not the “leaders/ preachers” of the church did not neglect however the spreading of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. ( Philip was faithful in the seemingly “un-glamorous” part of ministry - Serving tables.)

Sadly, Stephen, one of the seven, was martyred by Paul, who was at that time Saul, not long after the ordination. Stephen was not the only person who was martyred and the church in Jerusalem and Judea was being hunted out and persecuted by Saul (Act 8:3). “The congregation at Jerusalem was sadly disrupted” (Lenski 315) . Because of this “those who had been scattered went about preaching the word” (Acts 8:4b).

Acts 8:5 say “Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began proclaiming Christ to them.” In many ways this was a bold move on the part of Philip (Bruce 177) . There was a “longstanding cleavage, going back to early times” between Judea and Samaria (Bruce 176) . Yet even though there was a racial division the people of Samaria still listened to Philips preaching. (Philip had courage to go where needed.)

The fact that the crowd was of “one accord” and “giving attention” to what was said by Philip in verse 6. Is a testimony to the fact that God approved of Philips boldness and work. Not only was Philip preaching the word, but he was also performing signs that authenticated the message (Walvoord and Zuck 372) . Many believed the “good news.” His “message in Samaria was the Messiah that it, that Jesus was the Christ” (Harrison 1138) . (Philip simple preached that Jesus was God and repentance.)

As a result of God using Philip many were baptized in a profession of faith both men and women alike. (The gospel is not gender specific like many false religions.) While in Samaria Philip ran into a man by the name of Simon who was practicing magic and claiming to be someone of great power. He [Simon] prayed on the fears and superstitions of the people to make himself great.News of Philips ministry, the work being done in Samaria, reached the ears of the Apostles in verse 14, And in verse 15 the Apostles Peter and John came down and prayed that the new believers might receive the Holy Spirit. It is interesting to note that, Philip is not mentioned once in verses 14- 25. He seems to just fade out of the picture while Simon comes back into the picture and tries to buy the Holy Spirit. (“Philip’s aim in his ministry was just the reverse of Simon’s aim in his sorcery. The latter sought popularity and influence for himself; the former sought to attract men to the Savior. And, accordingly any increase in the knowledge, any confirmation in the faith of the Savior, was to Philip a matter of pure joy, because he sought people’s souls, and not their suffrages” ( Hasting 123) .)

Philip comes back into the picture in verse 26 of Acts 8. While Peter and John went back to Jerusalem, Philip was called by “an angel of the Lord” to the dessert of Gaza. While there Philip sees an Ethiopian eunuch in a chariot and is told by the “Spirit” to go up and join it. (Philip was sensitive to the leading of the Spirit.)

When Philip drew near the chariot he over heard the eunuch, who was an official in the court of Queen Candace, reading from Isaiah 53. Upon hearing this Philip asks the eunuch is he understands what the passage is referring to. (Philip uses an innocent question to initiate sharing the gospel.)

In response the eunuch invites Philip onto the chariot. Where “beginning from this scripture he preached Jesus Christ” (Acts 8:35). And so, “Philips persuasive exposition of the Servant’s [Jesus’] passion found it’s way home to the Ethiopian’s heart; apparently he also told him…that the appropriate response to such good news was repentance and baptism for the remission of sinsand the reception of the Holy Spirit” (Bruce 189) . (Philip used the prophecy of the suffering servant, the scriptures, to preach Jesus.) This can be seen because, upon seeing the some water the eunuch requested to be baptized. In response to the eunuchs request Peter said “If you believe with all your heart, you may” (Acts 8:37). And so the Eunuch was baptized.

The fact that Philip was so willing to witness to a gentle is interesting because it “put him face to face with the question of receiving Gentiles into the church. The apostle had not as yet encountered the question: ‘on what terms and in what manner are Gentiles to be received?’”( Lenski 337) (Philip was on a mission from God…he did what he was commanded to do. And fulfilled the commission found in Act 1:8.)“When he came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away, and the eunuch no longer saw him,” (Acts 8:39). Peter was taken to “Azotus, and as he passed through he kept preaching the gospel to all the cities until he came to Ceasarea” (Acts 8:40). (Preaching/ Evangelizing was a habitual thing for Philip.)

Ceasarea is where Philip seems to stop and make a home. The next time we see him is in Acts 21:8 twenty years later (Bruce 191) . Philip’s dedication to the gospel and training people in the ways of Christ does not stop however. Because in Acts 21:9 it tells us that Philip had four daughters who were prophetesses. (Philip gave attention to the training of his family in the ways of God.) In Summary, Philips ministry was an incredible one. He went from being a somewhat no name deacon to a full fledge evangelist. In many ways, “Philip was his [Paul’s] precursor in application of the same, both in zealous missionary operations and, especially, in opening the door of the church to non-Jewish believers” (Hastings 118)

And on top of everything, Philip proved himself to be a humble man. He went out as a commissioned missionary approved by the congregation and apostles in Jerusalem – even though he was going out on his own, he was still willing to be under the apostles authority.

Works Cited

Bruce, F.F. The numbers of abortions in the USA grew until reaching a yearly “high of over 1.6 million in 1990.”1 Since then the number of abortions in the USA have decreased. However, there have been over 49,551,703 babies killed in the past 40 years. Life Services and Pregnancy Resource Centers around the USA see life as sacred and seek to reduce the number of abortion and share the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Life Services goal is to be a light to Spokane. Especially to women who are either considering an abortion, or who have had an abortion in the past. They seek to accomplish this by providing pregnancy testing/ medical assistance, Godly counseling, a safe maternity home, boutique/support services (i.e. new items for mothers and their babies,) parenting classes, and the iPulse educational program.

Life Services is always looking for “cheerful, caring, Christian people who are called to work in this area of ministry.”2 In order to volunteer you will have to sign up and go through their

“Basic Volunteer Training.” Training a two week programs with four separate sessions held on Tuesday’s and Thursday from 6:30-9:30pm. These two week training programs are generally held four times a year at the administrative offices on Ash St. After Basic Training, Advanced training and Continuing Education opportunities are available after an application process.” important to note that the registration cost for Basic Training is $15.

Here is how to apply go to the “volunteer” page at www.lifeservice.org. From ovulation to conception, all through the process God was there. He is there at our first heart beats. He creates the umbilical cord and forms our arm and leg buds. Our arms and legs stretch out and He feels our kick. He programs the neurons in our mind. From fetus to new born babe God is there. Humans are precious in God’s sight.

Abortion is not something that Christians can ignore. 49,551,703 children murdered is not something to be taken lightly. Exodus 20:13 and Deuteronomy 5:17 explicitly say “You shall not murder.” If God sees man as precious how much more can we do but see life and precious and take a stand.

Works Cited

1 Life, National Right to. However he does not just say to be “harmonious” (i.e. like minded) but he tells how to be harmonious with God and believers.

In order to be harmonious…
• Be sympathetic, and kindhearted. We are we are to care about other people.
• Be humble in spirit. Sinful pride will hinder and ultimately destroy the “harmony” if it goes un-checked.
• Do not return evil for evil or insult for insult. Taking revenge will not build like minded harmony.
• Bless those who are hard to love!

The call to harmonious is a call to be a blessing. God has blessed us and called us out of life of sin to be a blessing. And in this passage specific case a blessing to each other.

Sadly, I have not been living in harmony with certain people or with God. I have been harboring anger in my heart. My desire to bless and encourage believers has faltered. And even worse my time with God has not been as it should. I have forgotten to be like minded with Christ!!!!

And so to God and whom it may concern,
I am sorry for my actions over the past several months. Please forgive me for being even a little distracted from seeking ways to be a blessing! Please forgive me for not being a humble and gentle man after Your (God’s) own heart!

Sincerely,
Kevin

Dream it...and do it!

I have been working on a theory about God and missions. It’s a rather bold and rather impractical by earthly standards. But nothing about missions is practical by earthly standards. I mean think about it; that in their right mind would be willing to walk hundreds of miles, suffer shipwrecks, beatings, sickness, the weather, loneliness, and just over all hardship for a belief? No one. right?
Here is my theory, if it can be dreamed for God, It can be done by God! Now you may or not be thinking: “Kevin how did you think of this?” Well, let me tell you. I was sitting on a but going to a little city in Alajuality, Costa Rica. And As I was sitting there feeling a little discouraged, because I didn’t feel like I was doing great things for God. And as I continued to think about it over the course of the next few days I realized that a dream for God, and success in that dream is not measured by earthly standards.
Missionary history is full of things men and women who did amazing things for God. And I am sure that they felt discouraged and probably felt that they were not doing great things for God. Gladys Aylward was a serving girl who had a burden to reach the people of China with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She approached missions agencies, and they all said that she was not qualified to go to China. So on her own she started to study, and save to go to China. When she got to China few years after she got to china, she saved about 100 orphans from the Japanese invasion by taking the for 12 days over the mountain, along with many other great things.. A lady who the world and even many Christains said was not qualified to serve in China did extraordinary things for God. Gladys had a dream! A dream for God! And she did not let anyone tell her the calling was wrong! God gave her a dream, and He gave her the means to accomplish the dream!
You see our qualification is the fact that we are sons and daughters of God. If you are Christains you are qualified to be missionaries. And don’t let anyone tell you different! If God has given you a burden a passion for the lost go after it and don’t be discouraged! And if you don’t have a passion for the lost…you need to re-evaluate you priorities and your faith!

Integrity

Integrity

A mother gave her young son a command. She said: “My son, live in integrity!” Unfortunately the command was not explained to the boy. He walked away wondering: “What is integrity? And why is integrity important?” The mother’s command lacked practical application for the boy. I am writing this essay to clarify the word integrity and to give practical application to the importance of living in integrity.

Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary defines integrity as "1: an unimpaired condition: soundness 2: adherence to a code of moral, artistic, or other values 3: the quality or state of being complete or undivided: completeness ”(Webster 439). While this definition includes several synonyms already it is beneficial to note that honesty, honor, and unity are also synonyms of integrity. And this definition is from a secular view point. To help give us a better understanding of the word “integrity,” we will look at a Christian viewpoint. The New American
Standard Ryrie Study Bible Expanded Edition’s dictionary (1995 Update) defines integrity as “Sincerity of purpose and single-hearted devotion.” (Ryrie 2194). If I were to combine these definitions they would say, “Integrity is to be without guile and deceit, completely honest, with un-compromising uprightness of character!”

The Holy Bible in Psalms 15 gives a very clear and precise picture of Integrity.

Psalms 15: 1-5 says “1. A Psalm of David. O LORD, who may abide in Your tent? Who may dwell on Your holy hill? 2. He who walks with integrity, and works righteousness, And speaks truth in his heart. 3. He does not slander with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor takes up a reproach against his friend; 4. In whose eyes a reprobate is despised, But who honors those who fear the LORD; He swears to his own hurt and does not change; 5. He does not put out his money at interest, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken.”(Psalms 15:15)
Do you see the practicality of being a person of integrity? No one trusts a liar. No one wants lies, gossip, spread about them. Do you want friends? Don’t hurt your neighbor! Really, it’s a matter treating others how you want to be treated. It is part of good business. As well as the secular benefits of integrity, there are spiritual benefits as well. God will take care of and bless those living in integrity and seeking Him.

Proverbs 10:9 goes on to confirm what Psalms 15:5 says: “He who walks in integrity walks securely, But he who perverts his ways will be found out” (Proverbs 10:9). In other words, a man without guile and deceit, completely honest, with un-compromising uprightness of character has nothing to fear. No matter how hard a person without integrity tries to disguise his true nature, or lack of integrity, he will be unable to hide.

If you are living for God, and seeking God, you are living in integrity! Integrity affects both our secular lives and spiritual lives. If we are living in integrity we are in favor with God! My friends please live in integrity! Live for God!

Works Cited

Webster, Noah. It is “The description of the divine justice, and its judicial manifestation on earth.” (Keil and Delitzsch 9)1 God had spared them almost 100 years earlier because of their repentance upon hearing the message from Jonah. Sadly, Nineveh quickly fell back into their sin and wickedness. God, who had been “slow to anger,” is going to punish Nineveh. “The forbearance of God had been extended to Nineveh a century earlier in response to her repentance (Jonah 3:10); But it was forfeited by her subsequent history of ruthless evil making way for God’s judgment instead.” (Gaebelein 462)2

Notes:
1. “The Lord is slow to anger and great in power.” That is not to say that “His long-suffering is not from a want of power.”(Fausset 612)3
2. God’s slowness to anger is “an emanation from His love and mercy.”(Keil and Delitzsch 9)4
3. God’s desire is that no one should perish, but all come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9) “He [God] is long-suffering and patient… because of His desire that people repent. This was exhibited in His sending Jonah to Nineveh, about 100 years before Nahum prophesied.” (Walvoord and Zuck 1497)5
4. “And the Lord will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.” God is Holy. And being holy He can not leave sin unpunished. As can be seen in Psalms 96:13 God will judge the earth.
5. “In the whirlwind and storm is His way,” The Lord is powerful and majestic. “The power and majesty of God are evidenced most dramatically in the forces of nature.”(Gaebelein 462)6 it is incredible to realize that “for all their grandeur, however, these mighty forces are dwarfed in the presence of the Lord, whom the highest heavens can not contain.” (Gaebelein 462)7
6. “And clouds are the dust beneath His feet.” This is another reference to the power, and majesty of God. Isaiah 66:1 talks about the earth being the foot stool to God’s feet. One commentator says “the tempest is but the disturbance caused as he marches by, and the dark storm clouds are stirred by his feet.” (Gaebelein 462)8

Big Idea: God judges the wicked.

Application:
God’s mercy and justice are important to understand. They go hand in hand. He can not be a loving God without the mercy. On the other hand, He would not be a Holy God without being just. God desires that all come to repentance. He is reaching out to you right offering salvation. However, if you do not accept the salvation He offers, and keep on sinning…you are His enemy and you will be judged for you sin.

1 Keil and Delitzsch, Biblical Commentary on The Old Testament Vol. 2, p. 9-10.
2 Frank E. They did not find a way to an inhabited city.
5 They were hungry and thirsty; Their soul fainted within them.
6 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He delivered them out of their distresses.
7 He led them also by a straight way, To go to an inhabited city.
8 Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men!
9 For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.
10 ¶ There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death, Prisoners in misery and chains,
11 Because they had rebelled against the words of God And spurned the counsel of the Most High.
12 Therefore He humbled their heart with labor; They stumbled and there was none to help.
13 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses.
14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death And broke their bands apart.
15 Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men!
16 For He has shattered gates of bronze And cut bars of iron asunder.
17 ¶ Fools, because of their rebellious way, And because of their iniquities, were afflicted.
18 Their soul abhorred all kinds of food, And they drew near to the gates of death.
19 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses.
20 He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.
21 Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men!
22 Let them also offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, And tell of His works with joyful singing.
23 ¶  Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters;
24 They have seen the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep.
25 For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, Which lifted up the waves of the sea.
26 They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; Their soul melted away in their misery.
27 They reeled and staggered like a drunken man, And were at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses.
29 He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed.
30 Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired haven.
31 Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men!
32 Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people, And praise Him at the seat of the elders.
33 ¶  He changes rivers into a wilderness And springs of water into a thirsty ground;
34 A fruitful land into a salt waste, Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
35  He changes a wilderness into a pool of water And a dry land into springs of water;
36 And there He makes the hungry to dwell, So that they may establish an inhabited city,
37 And sow fields and plant vineyards, And gather a fruitful harvest.
38 Also He blesses them and they multiply greatly, And He does not let their cattle decrease.
39 When they are diminished and bowed down Through oppression, misery and sorrow,
40 He pours contempt upon princes And makes them wander in a pathless waste.
41 But He sets the needy securely on high away from affliction, And makes his families like a flock.
42 The upright see it and are glad; But all unrighteousness shuts its mouth.
43 Who is wise? Let him give heed to these things, And consider the lovingkindnesses of the LORD.

3 days

Dear Friends,

Thanksgiving is only 3 days away. I am very excited for multiple reasons. One, good food and rest. And two, God has been very good to me over the past year.

The past year has been a struggle in many ways physically and spiritualy. But God has always provided for me and drawn me closer to Him.

I look forward to seeing how God will stretch me and grow me over the next year!

"Blessed to be a Blessing!"

Where in the World is Kevin?: THERE IS A PLACE WHERE HE IS NOT WORSHIPED!!! The speaker at the beginning of the verse apparent urgency says, “Catch the foxes for us.” The danger is immanent and threatens something of importance that is about to come to fruition. “Foxes were noted for their destructive tendencies in crop fields.” (Walvoord, P. 1015)2

2. “The little foxes that are ruining the vineyards.” The little foxes are symbolic of sin and distractions. And the vineyard is symbolic of relationships. Just as the foxes were ruining the vineyard, if the lover and beloved allowed sin and distractions to go un-checked it would ruin the relationship. “ The vineyards, beautiful with fragrant blossom, point to her covenant of love; and the foxes, the little foxes, which might destroy these united vineyards, point to all the great and little enemies, adverse circumstances, which threaten to gnaw and destroy love in blossom, ere it has reached the ripeness of enjoyment.” (Delitzsch, P.53)3

3. The request shows a desire for their relationship and actions to be godly and upright. “She requests that anything which would spoil the vineyard of their lives must be caught and eradicated. Let love be pure and undisturbed. There is no place here for lust, adultery, fornication, cheap sentimentality, or anything else which would spoil true love between man and wife.” (Guthrie, P. 582)4

4. “Even in ideal courtships and marriages most couples encounter some potentially destructive problems. Their willingness to solve them together is an evidence of their maturity.” (Walvoord, P. 1015)5 In every area of life there are things that are hazardous. The courage and integrity displayed in confronting and solving problems shows extreme maturity.

5. This passage relates to more than just couples. It holds insights for believers whether in a relationship or single. “This charge to take the foxes is, A charge to believers to mortify their own sinful appetites and passions which are as foxes…that destroy their graces, crush good beginnings, and prevent their coming to perfection.” (Henry, P. 815)6

Big Idea: Distractions cause destruction.

Application: While this is a request between two lovers, it holds truth for those who are single, perusing a relationship, or married. No matter how little or great, sin always causes damage, especially in our relationships. We need to “catch…the little foxes that are ruining the vineyards.” Pursuing our relationship with God and following Him wholeheartedly are the most important aspects of our Christian walk. Paul cautioned Timothy saying to“[keep the] faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith.” (1 Timothy 1:19) Paul recognized the danger of leaving sin un-checked as did the writer of Song of Solomon.

1 Walvoord, The Bible Knowledge Commentary, p. 1015.

2 Walvoord, The Bible Knowledge Commentary, p. 1015.

3 Franz Delitzsch, Commentary on the Song of Songs and Ecclesiastes, p. 53.

4 Guthrie, The New Bible Commentary Revised, p. 582.

5 Walvoord, The Bible Knowledge Commentary, p. 1015.

6 Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible, p.815.

Prayer Requests

It's been a little over two month since I moved to Washington to attend Moody Bible Institutes Spokane Campus.

I am very excited to be here studying God's Word so that I can be better equiped for the God's work!

A few prayer request I have are...

- Finances: I am barely surviving on what I am making at Red Robin. The first command, “Go.” And the second command, “deliver Israel.” Sadly, Gideon makes excuses. Even through Gideon’s excuses God continues to say, “I will be with you.”

Notes:
1. God reassures Gideon in verse 14. The Lord looks at him and says “Go in this your strength…deliver Israel…Have I not sent you?” When God tells Gideon to, “Go in this your strength.” God is basically saying the same thing He said to Joshua, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9)
2. The Lord is not telling Gideon to go and do everything on his own. He is reassuring him. “Go, in not thy might, but go in this thy might, this which thou hast now received, go in the strength of the Lord God, that is, the strength with which thou must strengthen thyself.” (Henry 250)1 In other words, “The strength Gideon possessed was a promise of the Lord’s presence with him. Gideon could exchange his weakness for God’s strength.” (Gaebelein 420.)2
3. Unfortunately, even though God has given him a job to do, Gideon makes excuses. He doubts his ability, qualifications, and possibly, even his calling to save Israel. Thus Gideon does not immediately rise to the task God has given him. I love this excerpt from the book The Greater Men and Women of the Bible “Don’t allow your heart to hold or utter such a thought as that you don’t trust God. Though you feel weak in faith don’t give way to distrust, don’t permit it in yourself. How often is that call given as a needful one…Hold fast the beginning of your confidence without wavering; for He is faithful that hath promised.” (Hastings 456.)3
4. "Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man." (Judges 6:16b) Once again the Lord reiterates His protection and blessing. “God’s reassurance reaffirmed His presence with Gideon…and the ease of which he would accomplish the victory over the Midianites.”(Walvoord and Zuck 392.)4

Big Idea: God’s strength is sufficient.

Application: God will never ask us to do something that He will not give us the strength to accomplish. As Christians we can calmly rise to God’s call knowing that He is in control and will never leave us or forsake us. He will be glorified. In fact His strength is often perfected in our weaknesses and insecurities. As it says in 2 Corinthians 12:9, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Another way to explain it is, “But in the ways of the Lord, Gideon’s inadequacy allows room for what is most important and determinative in this mission: God’s presence and God’s strength.” (Keck 796)5

1 Matthew Henry, Commentary on the Whole Bible from Genesis to Revelation, p. 250.
2 Frank E. He is brought to Egypt and is sold to the head of Pharaoh’s guard, Potiphar. However, God is with Joseph giving him success. Joseph quickly rises to a prominent position in the Egyptian’s house.

Several notes on this episode:

1. Joseph was brought to Egypt as a slave. “Though a slave, he accepted his position with cheerfulness, and entered into his new life, doing his duties so well that he soon became overseer in his master’s house.” (Hastings D.D. Page 494.)1 It is remarkable to note the integrity and persistence he must have had. I wonder how he came to have such integrity? Joseph’s father, Jacob, and his brothers were not very good examples. And I can not help but wonder if the experiences in Joseph’s life played a large roll in creating integrity.
2. “And so Joseph found favor in his sight…his personal servant…made him overseer over his house, and all that he owned.” (Genesis 39:4) Joseph was given incredible responsibility and he did not abuse that responsibility. In fact Joseph’s time in Potiphar’s house helped prepare him for God’s plan to use him, to save many, as ruler of Egypt. “Joseph was sold to an officer of Pharoah, with whom he might get acquainted with public persons and public business, and so be fitted for the preferment for which he was designed. What God intends men for He will be sure, some way or other, to qualify them for.” (Henry Page 59.)2
3. “The LORD was with Joseph.”(Genesis 39:2) It can be easily be assumed that by God being with Joseph, God was blessing Joseph. The next part of the verse confirms this assumption by saying: “so he became a successful man.” Genesis 39:3 goes on to say: “Now his master saw that the LORD was with him and how the LORD caused all that he did to prosper in his hand.” Potiphar could see the hand of God in Joseph’s life. God continues to affirm with promise to Abraham. Joseph is being both a spiritual blessing and a physical blessing to Potiphar.
4. Joseph quickly rises to a prominent position in the Egyptian’s house. “This is not a story of the success of Joseph; rather it is a story of God’s faithfulness to His promises.” (Gaebelein 234.)3 Abraham was Joseph’s great-great grandfather. And the continuance of God’s promise to Abraham, “And I will make you a great nation… And so you shall be a blessing.”(Genesis 12:2), can be easily seen in the Genesis 39:2-5.

Big Idea: God keeps His promises.

Application: No matter where we go or what happens in our life God is always faithfull. He will use us to fullfill His promises and plans. I am sure that Joseph did not understand why he was sold to Egypt. But through it all Jospeh was faithfull. And even though the Davidic line was carried through Judah, God used Joseph to both save and bless many.

1.James Hastings D.D, Greater Men and Wemon of the Bible, P. 494.
2. Here are a few highlights.

· On our way it started to rain fairly hard. Kyle and I were both willing to get wet in the process, but at the same time we were a little frustrated. We both prayed that God would clear the rain and that it wouldn’t hinder the proclaiming of the gospel. Praise God 5 minute later the rain cleared and the sun came out!
· We went down town with about 600 tracts. We used them all in under 1 ½ hours!
· We met multiple death people while downtown. Kyle has been learning Latin American Sign Language. So he was able to share a little bit and bless the people through sign language.
· We were able to put Gospel tracts into the hands of multiple police officers!

Kyle and I were both very excited and pleased with the response. Please pray that God would use the tracts to plant seeds and even bring people to repentance and a saving knowledge of Him!

Half and Half

One week left! My heart is filled with sadness at this thought. I have come to love Costa Rica, Latin America, and Latinos more than ever before. It’s weird, but I think of myself as ½ Gringo and ½ Latino. I walk down the street and I see a white person, a Gringo, and I wonder why there are strangers here. Hahaha.

Elizabeth Elliot once said: “From St Paul to St. Nicholas of Japan there has been no missions without self-identification of the missionary with those to whom God has sent him, without a sacrifice of his personal attachments and his natural values.”

Maybe that is part of it…I have spent time and effort trying to understand and become the culture, that I in at least a few aspects become like them. By coming to Costa Rica I have sacrificed being close to loved ones, being in a familiar area, and I have tried to identify with the people here.

And you know by identifying with them and trying to become one of them. I went to Los Niños de Alajualita in the morning as I normally do. Now before I go on with my story, let me explain a little about “Niños de Alajualita”. Los Niños de Alajualita is a care center for children of single mothers and poor families. I believe the lady who runs it is Catholic. They have about 5 kids in attendance, 3 girls, and 2 boys. My job is to play and love on the kids. I go for a few hours 3 days a week.

There were 3 kids on Wednesday morning; 2 little girls (5yrs and 3yrs) and a baby. We were playing ball in the street outside, and the younger of the two girls wasn’t listening to me very well. I’d have her get out of the street for cars and remind her to play nice. Over all she was simply being disobedient. She wasn’t listening and I wouldn’t let her play with us anymore. I put her in time out.

She didn’t listen when I put her in “Time-out" either. Instead, she got her friend to come up to me and ask if I would buy them candy. I said “NO” and explained that there are consequences to our actions and I wasn’t going to buy candy. The little girls proceeded to beg me. AND THEN WHEN BEGGING DIDN’T WORK!!! They decided to try a different approach. They uncovered their shoulders and tried to act all skanky. MY HEART BROKE!!! A 5 year old girl and a 3 year old girl were trying to act like whores to bribe me into buying candy. I was so mad and sad at what had just happened. I was so ashamed of their actions and angry at whoever taught them to act this way!!!!

I didn’t budge to their pleas. So, they started a new tactic. They started to fight. The head lady came to see what was going on…and the girls ran to ask her for candy. The lady asked me to go buy candy. I politely but firmly said “NO, I am not going to buy these girls candy. They haven’t been listening and I am not going to reward their bad actions.” The lady didn’t challenge me, but seemed a little annoyed. Her method was to appease the situation and avoid confrontation.

The next 20 minute were filled with the little girls fighting. As I walked home I marveled in frustration and what had happened that morning. I was reminded of the importance of teaching good, strong morals and convictions from an early age!!!!

Please pray for the Children of Alajualita! Pray that God would call them to His heart! Also, please pray for God to give me grace and wisdom for the future!!!

~Kevin

Written Exam.

I got the results for the written test today. 85% Looks like I need to pick up some slack.

90%

Yesterday (Monday July 13) I had two Spanish tests. Then we walk 1/2 a mile to get on a bus going to Aljualita (where the ministry sight is.) And then 1/2 more of walking. Now when I say walking...turning left and right is included. Not just walking straight.

Now my guide was very good about making sure I knew how to get home. And I took detailed notes...but it took us about an 1 1/2 hours to get there...it took me almost 2 hours to get home BY MYSELF! It was definatly a little bit of a stretch.

Okay. Fun stuff...

I am working with a place for "poor kids." I play with them, and basicaly just love on them 3 days a week. There are about 5 Kids.( I am still learning there names.) But while I was there 2 of the little girls decided to use me as a horse. Now normaly that wouldn't have been a big deal...But my shoulders WERE sunburned(I spent the weekend on the Carib side of Costa Rica) and HAD blisters. HAhaha My blisters are gone now. ;) But It was fun!

The ministry site is in a little bit more dangerous area. And I will be going there by myself. Please pray for safety in travel! Also, pray that I would be a blessing a light to the kids, and the workers at the site!

Well, I am off to do homework!

Mi Hermano Tico, Unos Amigos, y Yo

<img style="display:block; My first week at the school was a slow week yet full of learning. It was a week of learning the neighborhood, adjusting to school, and making new friends. I am anxious to get started in ministry. I will be talking to a contact of mine soon (Hopefully) about ministry opportunities.

Now that the house keeping details are out of the way; let’s get down to business! As I have had a little more free time than I’d like…I’ve been doing some thinking. I know, I know, Kevin thinking can be a dangerous thing, especially for me. I hate seeing my own flaws, and sin. But please indulge me….

I have been frustrated about the fact that I am not in ‘ministry’ right now. And in a way that is true. But I was reminded that ministry is a life style it is a choice to serve God. In reality ministry is being faithful in the little things God gives us and dreaming BIG things for God! Now, when I say big things…I mean, LIVES CHANGED BY THE POWER OF GOD’S WORD AND THE CALLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT! My job is not to dictate God’s will on my life. My job is to be faithful, and open to what ever God would have me do!

Please don’t mis-understand me. I don’t want to be lazy, and negligent. Remember, “Faithful in what God put before me.” And I am looking for opportunities to serve. But IT IS NOT MY PLACE TO DICTATE GOD’S WILL FOR MY LIFE!!!! And I must confess that I was trying to do that…my frustration was stemming from sin and not seeing what God is doing. And I can’t say that I see what He is doing just yet…I am excited to see what HE IS DOING, and what HE WILL DO here in Costa Rica!

“Don’t seek after a ministry, but seek after the fruits of a disciplined life!”

COSTA RICA

I am finaly in Costa Rica. I have received two rather large financial gifts, was prayed over by at least 800 people, and had a former Spanish professor of mine offer me a letter of introduction to her buddies in Costa Rica. God has truly blessed me!
I am “Blessed to be a Blessing!” God has blessed me. Now I have the HUGE responsibility to use the gifts to further God’s, name and be a blessing to the nations.

I leave for San José, Costa Rica in less than a week. I am very excited. However, I am concerned that I will not live to my fullest for God. Please, please pray that I will go with a servants hearts; giving 110% for God every day. Also, pray that my time in Costa Rica would not be easy!!!!! Pray that God would put me in situations that would stretch me, and help me grow!!!! I have performed across the USA using the art of theatrical illusion to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and encourage believers. These trips and the experiences associated with them have played a major role in affirming a desire from God, a calling, to go into international missions, particularly in Latin America.

Since, March of 2008 I have been praying for the opportunity to spend an extended period of time studying and solidifying my skills as a Spanish speaker in another country. After many attempts, much hard work, and prayer; I am excited to say that a dream has become a reality. I will be attending the Spanish Language Institute in San Jose, Costa Rica June 14 - August 8, 2009. (The Spanish Language Institute is run by Latin American Missions (LAM). The school is highly recommended. Many missions agencies utilize The Institute for language training.)

Along with studying Spanish, I hope to build friendships make contacts with the other missionary students, and encourage the local Tiko family with whom I will be living. Hopefully, I will be working with a local TEAM missionary.

I am very excited about this opportunity and am very grateful for God’s provision and grace!!!

Here are a few ways you can be praying:
· Pray for my work schedule. I have a very hectic and demanding work schedule. I have two jobs and am working as much as 65 hours a week. Pray that I don’t burn out. And that I will stay focused on my quieted time!
· Pray that I would learn quickly and retain information quickly!!
· Pray that I would be an encouragement to the family where I will be staying, my fellow students, the teachers, and the missionary in Costa Rica.
· Pray that I will draw closer to God!
· Pray for safety in travel and health.

I have created a BlogSpot to post prayer requests and give updates throughout the trip. www.whereispuckett.blogspot.com or feel free to shoot me an email: magicbykevin@verizon.net or call 971-409-5291.

Thanks you for you prayer!

Kevin Puckett
